school of hygiene Kano.

School of Hygiene Kano now College of Health Science and Technology is the oldest health institution in the north that produces many health practitioners whom directly or indirectly shapes the health services delivery in various capacities across the nation. The school was established in 1932/33 for the purpose of training health personnel for the entire Northern region. The training of environmental health officers in the institution commenced with 12 students from different parts of northern region. The regional government was in charge of the administration of institution and the students were trained in different aspect of preventive health.

Over the years, when the service of the institution in field of training improved, the name of the school was changed to Ahmadu Bello University institution of Health, school of Hygiene, Kano. When the institution was run by ABU, the people of Kano realized that the indigenes of Kano were not benefiting well in terms of admission despite playing host of the school. This led to an agitation for the transfer of the ownership of the college to Kano state government during the administration of late Sabo Bakin Zuwo. This led to its take over in 1980. New equipment and facilities were installed and  training was improved upon. Also See: School Of Health Technology Kankia

However, after independence, taking the papers to London for marking became tedious and expensive, as a result Ghana, Nigeria, The Gambia, Sierra Leone and Liberia all former British colonies opted out in 1982. They decided to set up their own examination board, the west Africa Health Examination Board (WAHEB) based at Yaba, Lagos.  The school currently runs over 12 different courses which are all accredited by various regulatory bodies; runs degree program in affiliation with University of Ibadan; and more programs are on the way in collaboration with other institutions of higher learning, all geared towards providing adequate and resourceful manpower in the health sector.
