What is Prostate Cancer? 

Prostate cancer is a type of cancer that occurs in the prostate — a small walnut-shaped gland in men that produces the seminal fluid that nourishes and transports sperm. Symptoms include difficulty with urination, but sometimes there are no symptoms at all. Approximately 11.2 % of men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer at some point during their lifetime.The number of new cases of prostate cancer is 112.6 per 100,000 men per year and the number of deaths  is 19.5 per 100,000 men per year.

 

How To Detect Prostate Cancer 

Prostate cancer is detected by screening tests which might include: Digital rectal exam otherwise known as (DRE). During a DRE, your doctor  will insert a gloved, lubricated finger into your rectum in order to examine your prostate, which is adjacent to the rectum. During this procedure, your doctor will be looking for things such as an enlarged prostate, nodules or tenderness of the prostate, gross blood, hemorrhoids, anal fissures, and rectal tumors. If your doctor finds any abnormalities in the  size ,texture or shape of the gland, you may need further tests such  biopsy, proctoscopy, sigmoidoscopy, or colonoscopy. Early warning signs of prostate cancer
  • Burning or pain during urination.
  • Difficulty urinating, or trouble starting and stopping while urinating.
  • More frequent urges to urinate at night.
  • Loss of bladder control.
  • Decreased flow or velocity of urine stream.
  • Blood in urine (hematuria)
  • Blood in semen.
