National Blood Transfusion Service (NBTS) Centers In Nigeria

A blood transfusion is a way of adding blood to your body after an illness or injury. If your body is missing one or more of the components that make up healthy blood, a transfusion can help supply what your body is missing. Depending on how much blood you need, a transfusion can take between 1 and 4 hours. In Nigeria, the National Blood Transfusion Service was established to provide a system of supplying safe and adequate quality blood and blood products to patients who may need it in any part of the country. The national blood policy is built on the voluntary non-remunerative donation of blood by healthy individuals.

The first Blood Transfusion Service Centre opened in Abuja in December 2004, by 2008 11 operational Centres across the six geopolitical zones in the country had already been opened. These Centres are in Abuja, Kaduna, Owerri, Ibadan, Lokoja, Jos, Maiduguri, Port-Harcourt, Benin City, Nangere – Potiskum, and Abeokuta.

In private hospitals patronised by a large population of Nigerians, the cost of blood is higher. For instance, a pint of blood now goes for between N15, 000 and N 25, 000, depending on the blood group, that is AB, O- and O+. In rural areas especially in the North, a pint of blood ranges from N 4500 – N10,000,  the National Blood Transfusion Service provides safe and adequate quality blood and blood products to patients free of charge.

Nigeria has a population of over 180 million, and the estimated blood need in the country is about 1.8 million units of blood per annum. Unfortunately, much less is donated leading to avoidable deaths and morbidity particularly among women folk, newborn children, victims of road traffic accidents and insurgencies.
