Chloroquine Tablets

Counterfeit medicine is fake medicine. It may be contaminated or contain the wrong or no active ingredient. They could have the right active ingredient but at the wrong dose. Counterfeit drugs are illegal and may be harmful to your health. As with many promising medications, fake chloroquine tablets are spreading globally unhampered like the corona virus.

Following earlier claims that chloroquine can be used in COVID-19 prophylaxis, counterfeiters went to work producing massive quantities of fake chloroquine. In the face of the COVID19 pandemic, criminal gangs will take advantage of the general shortage of medicines and markets may be flooded with falsified, inferior, defective, ineffective or even dangerous medicines.

Onset April this year, the WHO global surveillance and monitoring system on substandard and falsified medical products received 14 reports of confirmed falsified chloroquine products from 5 countries: Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Democratic Republic of Congo, France, and Niger. All reported products were identified at patient level and all have been confirmed as falsified. In Cameroon, DRC and Niger, five fakes have been detected by the Ecumenical Pharmaceutical Network running several Minilabs from the Global Pharma Health Fund (GPHF) at different sites in these countries. Their partner at Tübingen University published appropriate results in the Am J Trop Med Hyg. Beyond this action, more and widespread vigilance is required from all stakeholders in all countries, regardless of where the product was originally identified.

All medical products must be obtained from authentic and reliable sources. Their authenticity and condition of the product should be carefully checked. Consumers are advised to seek advice from a healthcare professional in case of doubt.

Chloroquine is referenced on the WHO Model List of Essential Medicines for the treatment of Plasmodium vivax infection (malaria). Large clinical trials are under way to generate the robust data needed to establish the efficacy and safety of chloroquine and hydroxychloroquine in the treatment of COVID-19. These medicines are currently authorized for malaria and certain autoimmune diseases only. It is important that patients do not face shortages caused by stockpiling or use outside the authorized indications.
