Depression is a common but serious mood disorder. It causes severe symptoms that affect how you feel, think, and handle daily activities, such as sleeping, eating, or working. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) 5th edition (), an individual is required to exhibit a minimum of five depressive symptoms every day for a period of at least two weeks, in order to be diagnosed with the condition. World Health Organization estimates 300 million people worldwide suffer from depression.

According to a study Major depressive disorder (MDD) is the most common mood disorder in the United States with a lifetime prevalence of 14.4%. MDD is a chronic, recurring, and debilitating mental disorder that significantly impairs occupational and/or social functioning. Most individuals suffering from MDD have recurring depressive episodes (10.3%) rather than a single lifetime episode (4.1%). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says depression affects about 7.6 percent of the U.S. population age 12 and over in any 2-week period.

Depression and anxiety are mental health issues which can be extremely debilitating and can also lead to fatalities hence the continuous research into new treatment options and alternatives.

What is BU10119 Antidepressant Drug?

BU10119 is a mixed κ/μ receptor antagonist with relatively short-duration κ antagonist activity developed by University of Bath scientists. BU10119 is a drug that allows you to have the properties of buprenorphine and naltrexone in a single molecule. The drug has therapeutic potential use for the treatment of depression and other stress-induced conditions.

How Does BU10119 Anti depressant Drug works?

The compound, BU10119, exerts it effect via a unique mechanism of action, and is unlike traditional antidepressant drugs; selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). This drug raises a lot of hope and could be used to treat depression and anxiety, while improving the mental health outcome for the 50% of people with depression and anxiety who don’t respond to SSRIs. BU10119 works on kappa opioid receptors, proteins in the brain associated with addiction and depression .This novel buprenorphine analogue was investigated in preclinical mouse studies. The team noted that mice administered BU10119 displayed antidepressant-like behaviors. Development of this compound was stimulated by previous research in to the use of buprenorphine and naltrexone, two existing drugs that, in combination, also exhibited potential as an antidepressant.

 

What are the Side Effects Of BU10119 Anti depressant Drug

There is currently very few information concerning this new drug. But as an analogue of buprenorphine it is expected to have similar side effects. The common side effects of buprenorphine include: drowsiness, dizziness, constipation, and  headache .

How and Where can I Buy The BU10119 Anti depressant Drug?

BU10119 is currently under development it is  one of several compounds from Bath University licensed to biotechnology company Orexigen Therapeutics in San Diego for commercial development. It is likely that the FDA will approve BU10119 for use. The FDA Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) is the watchdog for potential medications seeking approval for use in the United States. In order for CDER to begin evaluating a drug, pharmaceutical companies must first do extensive testing and document the results. Following the completion of clinical trials, BU10119 is expected to undergo a final review by the FDA review team which could sometimes take between 6 – 10 months to reach a decision.
